The Ministry of Health & Mass Media has officially opened applications for the Student Nursing Training Course for the year 2026. This full-time program offers a premier pathway into the government nursing service for eligible Sri Lankan citizens. Online registration is active from May 29, 2026, until the closing date on June 30, 2026.

Minimum Educational Qualifications

Applicants must meet distinct benchmarks in both G.C.E. O/L and G.C.E. A/L examinations to qualify for selection.

G.C.E. O/L Requirements

  • Must have passed at least 06 subjects in not more than two sittings.
  • Must obtain credit passes for 04 core subjects: Sinhala/Tamil Language, Mathematics, Science, and English.

G.C.E. A/L Requirements

Candidates must have passed any 03 subjects in a single sitting from either the Bio Science or Physical Science stream during the years 2021, 2022, 2023, or 2024. Common General Test and General English results are not counted as subjects.

  • Bio Science Stream: Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Physics, and Mathematics.
  • Physical Science Stream: Combined Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Advanced Mathematics.

District Selection & Z-Score Methodology

The recruitment process is structured systematically to guarantee fair regional representation:

  • Total island-wide training slots are allocated proportionally based on the population distribution of each individual district.
  • District quotas are further distributed across the valid examination years (2021–2024) relative to the local applicant pool.
  • Selections are finalized within each district based on the highest Z-scores mapped to the respective subject streams.
  • Residency Rules: Applicants must verify permanent residence in their chosen district for three consecutive years immediately before June 30, 2026, using a Grama Niladhari certificate.

Strict Ineligibility Clauses

To optimize government resources and enforce free education policy constraints, the following rules apply:

  • Students currently registered or following a full-time internal course at any State University or University College under the UGC are excluded.
  • Students enrolled in a National College of Education (Vidya Peeta) or any alternative full-time government institutional training are ineligible.
  • Canceling a prior university or college registration after the publication date of this Gazette (May 29, 2026) will not restore eligibility.
  • Trainees must remain unmarried throughout the entire three-year training period.

How to Apply

  1. Pay the Application Fee: Deposit Rs. 1,000/- to the Bank of Ceylon account named “The Secretary of the Ministry of Health & Mass Media., Collection of Examination fee” (Thaprobane Branch, Account No. 7041318). Cash deposit machines (CDMs) and internet banking are strictly prohibited. Keep the original receipt.
  2. Submit the Online Form: Visit the official portal at www.health.gov.lk to fill out the form in English. Only one electronic application is permitted per candidate.
  3. Confirm Email Receipt: A verification copy of your submission should arrive in your email. If it does not, contact the Human Resources Management and Coordination Unit before the June 30 deadline to resolve the issue.
  4. Attest the Signature: Print out the application from your screen and have your signature verified by an authorized officer (e.g., Justice of the Peace, Attorney-at-Law, or a permanent civil servant drawing an annual salary of at least Rs. 512,148/-).

Compulsory Service Bond

Upon registration at their assigned training school, selected candidates must sign an official legal agreement with two recognized guarantors. This bond legally obligates the trainee to complete the program and serve in the public or provincial public sector for a mandatory minimum period of ten (10) years. Withdrawing from the course midway or failing to fulfill the ten-year service window will trigger the active recovery of all stipends, fees, and contracted financial penalties by the government.
