School Term Schedule 2027 Exam Dates and School Holidays – Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has released the official Sri Lanka School Calendar 2027, providing the school term dates and holidays for Government schools, Government-approved private schools and approved Pirivenas.

According to Circular No. 31/2026, separate school term schedules have been announced for Sinhala and Tamil schools and Muslim schools for the 2027 academic year.

Sri Lanka School Term Dates 2027

For Sinhala and Tamil schools, the 2027 academic year will begin on Monday, January 4, 2027. The first and second terms will be followed by school vacation periods, while the third term will end on Friday, December 3, 2027.

Sinhala and Tamil Schools Term Dates 2027

School Holidays for Sinhala and Tamil Schools

After the first term, schools will be closed from April 10 to April 25, 2027. The vacation following the second term will be from July 31 to August 29, 2027.

Muslim School Calendar 2027

The Ministry has announced a separate phased school calendar for Muslim schools in 2027. The first term will be conducted in three phases, while the second term will be conducted in two phases.

Grade 12 and Grade 13 School Calendar 2027

The circular also provides a separate academic schedule for Grade 12 and Grade 13 students based on the year in which they are expected to sit for the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination.

For students appearing for the 2027 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, the Grade 13 academic programme will conclude on July 16, 2027.

Students preparing for the 2028 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination will continue their Grade 12 and Grade 13 academic activities according to the special schedule included in the official school calendar.

For students expected to sit for the 2029 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, new Grade 12 classes in 2027 are scheduled to begin on June 15, 2027 and continue until December 3, 2027.

New Grade 12 Classes Start on June 15, 2027

The Ministry specifically states that new Grade 12 classes for the year 2027 should commence on June 15, 2027.

The third term of Grade 13 for students sitting the 2027 Advanced Level Examination should be completed on July 16, 2027, after completing the syllabus and conducting the relevant term tests.

Number of School Days in 2027

The Ministry has planned to conduct Government schools, Government-approved private schools and approved Pirivenas for a total of 197 days in 2027, taking public holidays and scheduled school examinations into consideration.

2027 G.C.E. A/L and O/L Examination Months

According to the official school calendar, the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination 2027 is scheduled to be held in August 2027.

The G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination 2027 is scheduled to be held in December 2027.

Public Holidays and School Closures

All schools will remain closed on Government-declared public holidays, Sundays and official school holidays.

If a school has to be closed on a scheduled school day due to a special reason, replacement school sessions should be conducted as required by the Ministry.
