Understanding the Result Sheet Format

The online sheet is divided into several key sections. Here is what you will see:

Basic Info

Your Name, Index Number, and Subject Stream (e.g., Biological Science).

Subject Grades

Individual grades for your 3 main subjects (A, B, C, S, or F).

Z-Score

Your relative performance score (e.g., 1.3215).

District Rank

Your position within your administrative district.

Island Rank

Your overall ranking across all of Sri Lanka for your stream.

General Test

Your raw score for the Common General Test (e.g., 042).

How to Read Your Exam Results

A lot of students don’t understand the Z-score and ranking system. This is what the expert says:

The Z-Score is the best way to measure how well you did. It’s not a percentage; it’s a statistical measure that shows how far above or below the average you were. If your Z-score is positive (like 1.5), it means you did better than average. If it’s negative, it means you did worse than average.

Subject Difficulty: The Z-score system makes sure that subjects are not too hard or too easy. A “B” on a very hard Physics paper might give you a higher Z-score than a “A” on a paper that was much easier.

To get into a government university, you usually need to get at least a “S” in all three subjects and at least 30 points on the Common General Test.

District Quotas: Your district rank is often more important for selection than your island rank. This is because 55% of university seats are given out based on district quotas to make sure that students from all areas have a fair chance.
